To lose one's footing / To be out of one's depth
Literally 'to lose the foot/foothold'. Used for losing physical balance or figuratively losing control or confidence in a situation.
With so many questions, the speaker lost his footing.
At that level of the language I start to be out of my depth.
—How did the interview go? —I lost my footing on the last questions.
